The Barbarigo family was a very important venetian family and, according to the tradition, it was originally coming from Muggia and had arrived in the lagoon in the first years of the Serenissima Republic. Always according to the legend, the name of the dynasty was coming from the nickname of one of its member, Arrigo, who, after winning in 880 a big battle against the Turks, rounded of his head with a sort of crown made with the beards of its defeated opponents.
In Venice many palaces still have the Barbarigo’s names such as the one on the Gran Canal (see photo below). The Barbarigo family in Venice had many properties mainly next to the Church of Santa Maria Zobenigo, of which, according to tradition, they were the founder together with the Jubanici.
The Barbarigo family went extinct with Giovanni Filippo Barbarigo (1771-1843), that died without children.
